This year there were improved results in many
schools. Congratulations to everyone!
At
Grade 3, Four out of the 9 schools had more students at levels 3 and 4 for math,
five out of the 9 schools for reading, and four out of the 9 schools for
writing than last year. Central school
improved in all scores and two schools, Queen
Victoria and George R.Allan, improved in
two areas: in reading and writing. Some of the results showed substantial increases:
- Queen Victoria increased
by 8% in reading
- Bennetto
increased by 11% in reading
- George R.Allan
increased by 6% in reading and 24% in writing
- Hess Street
increased by 8 % in math,
- Central increased by 24%
in math, 5% in reading
At
Grade 6, Four out of the 6 schools had more students at
levels 3 and 4 for reading, four out of
6 schools for writing, and three schools improved for math. Queen Victoria
improved in all three areas. Bennetto improved in reading and math, Dr. Davey improved
in reading and writing, and Dalewood improved in writing and math. Some of the
results were again substantial increases on last year’s results.
- Dr Davey increased by 17
% in reading and 5% in writing
- Queen Victoria
increased 3% in reading 7% in writing and 18% in math
- Hess Street increased by 14% in
reading
- Bennetto increased by 11% in math
Board
Profile
This year the EQAO office reports that
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is once again above the provincial
average for the percentage of English Language Learners.
·
20% of grade 3 students are English Language learners
in Hamilton, compared to 10% in the Province and only 5% in the Catholic
Board.
·
In grade 6 the percentages are 19% for
HWDSB, 7% for the Province, and 4% for the Catholic Board.
Hamilton-Wentworth District
School Board also has a higher
percentage of special education students:
- 19% in grade 3 compared
to 16% for the Province and 14% for the Catholic board.
·
22% in grade 6 compared to 20 % for the Province and 17%
for the Catholic board
The
Education Quality Assessment Organisation (EQAO) tests are Provincial tests that
began in 1998 and are based on the Ontario Curriculum. The Ontario Curriculum was introduced in
1997.
